Ice Bath Chiller - What to Look for in Your Water Chiller

Ice Bath Chillers

Ice bath chillers are the best and most cost effective way to cool your ice bath water.

While most people use the traditional method of adding ice bags or ice block to cool down their ice bath, an ice bath chiller system is a way better option, but it’s important to choose the right one.

Ice bath chiller maintain optimal temperature of water for cold plunges and give you a hassle free way to enhance recovery, reduce inflammation, and promote overall well-being without the fuss of driving to the servo for ice every time.

When selecting an ice bath chiller, it’s crucial to understand how it works, the various filtration systems involved, and the importance of certifications. This article will guide you through what to look for in an ice bath chiller, ensuring you make an informed decision.

How an Ice Bath Chiller Works

An ice bath chiller operates by using a heat exchanger to pull heat away from the water as it circulates through the system. Here’s a breakdown of the process:

  1. Water Circulation: The water from the ice bath is pumped into the chiller.

  2. Heat Exchange: Inside the chiller, a heat exchanger removes heat from the water. This is typically achieved using a refrigerant that absorbs the heat from the water as it passes through the exchanger.

  3. Cooling: The refrigerant, now heated, is compressed and then passed through condenser coils, releasing the absorbed heat into the surrounding air.

  4. Cooled Water Return: The now cooled water is pumped back into the ice bath, maintaining a consistently low temperature.

Filtration Systems

To ensure the water remains clean and safe, high-quality ice bath chillers incorporate various filtration and sanitation systems. Here are the primary types:

Ice Bath Paper Filters

How the ice bath paper filter works

Paper filters are a fundamental component of your ice bath chiller water filtration systems, effectively removing larger particulates from the water, such as debris, dirt, and organic matter. The efficacy of these filters is often measured in microns, which indicate the size of the particles the filter can capture.

Micron Ratings: The micron rating of a filter specifies the smallest particle size the filter can trap. Common ratings include:

  • 50 Microns: Captures large particles like sand and debris.

  • 20 Microns: Provides superior filtration, trapping finer particles such as fine sediment and dust.

  • 5 Microns: Captures even finer particles, including most suspended solids and smaller debris.

Our ice bath chillers utilise 20-micron paper filters, offering a superior level of filtration that balances performance and maintenance needs. This rating ensures that the water is free from most contaminants while maintaining efficient flow rates and reducing the frequency of filter replacements. Ozone Sanitation

Ozone sanitation involves infusing the water with ozone (O3), a powerful oxidiser that breaks down contaminants and kills bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens.

Ozone is effective at sanitising water without leaving harmful residues, making it a popular choice for maintaining clean water. Ozone systems generate ozone gas and dissolve it into the water, where it reacts with organic and inorganic substances, rendering them harmless.

Ozone sanitation, which our chiller include, offers an ice bath chiller sanitation system that allows you to avoid using chemicals to treat the water. As a caveat to this, businesses and commercial spaces may be required by regulation to add treatment chemicals to their ice bath water, and water quality always remains the responsibility of the end user.

UV Sanitation

UV sanitation uses ultraviolet light to disinfect the water. As water flows through the UV chamber, it is exposed to UV-C light, which disrupts the DNA of microorganisms, rendering them harmless.

This method is highly effective at eliminating bacteria and viruses without adding chemicals to the water. UV systems typically include a quartz sleeve to protect the UV bulb and ensure maximum light penetration, maintaining high disinfection efficiency.

Metal Particulate Filters

Metal particulate filters are designed to remove finer metal particles that may enter the water system through corrosion or other means. These filters typically use a combination of mesh and magnetic elements to capture and retain metal particles, ensuring the water remains free of metallic contaminants.

These filters are crucial in environments where metal particles can pose health risks or damage equipment. They also offer a second filtration element that is a washable element that can be removed, washed under a tap and placed back into the ice bath chiller on a regular maintenance schedule.

The filters generally protect other elements of the chiller by filtering out debris that would damage other more sensitive sections of the chilling system.

Chiller Certifications and Safety Standards

Most ice bath chillers out do not meet the electrical standards. Read that again.

Ensuring that your ice bath chiller is certified to meet electrical standards for your country is paramount for safety and reliability. Certified chillers have undergone rigorous testing to meet specific safety and performance criteria, reducing the risk of electrical hazards and ensuring consistent operation. For example, our chillers are tested and certified to Australia and New Zealand specific standards, which are difficult to obtain.

Buying an ice bath chiller with electrical certification is a bit of a no-brainer, but many people don’t understand this is an area of importance or think to check with the supplier that they have such a level of testing and certification for the chiller.

You may notice many cheap chiller unit for ice baths out there, but what you will find is that 99% of them are not certified to Australian electrical standards and you are taking a big risk with your safety.

Many lower-quality ice bath chillers lack such certifications, posing potential safety risks. These uncertified chillers might not meet the necessary standards for electrical insulation, grounding, and overall construction, making them less reliable and potentially dangerous. Always look for chillers that carry certification marks from recognized standards organizations relevant to your country, such as UL, CE, ETL, or in Australia the RCM rating.

Temperature Ranges

One of the key features of a high-quality ice bath chiller is its ability to achieve a wide range of temperatures. This versatility allows the chiller to be used for both cold and hot plunges, providing comprehensive therapeutic benefits.

Some ice bath chiller only offer cold temperatures, while others only offer heated temperatures for a spa for example. Our chillers offer both hot and cold temperatures!

Our chillers, for instance, can achieve a temperature range of 3°C to 42°C. This wide range means they can effectively cool water for a refreshing cold plunge or heat it for a soothing hot plunge. The ability to adjust the temperature to such extremes makes our chillers suitable for various therapeutic applications, from muscle recovery to relaxation.

You may find other ice bath baths which offer temperatures advertised at 0 degrees celcius, but what you will find is that the ice bath would not operate at true zero or the water would be completely frozen. What this means is that these ice baths more likely operate at around 1 or 2 degrees celsius.

With an ice bath chiller unit with a temperature display, you have the benefit of being bale to set your desired temperature to the degree and the chiller will maintain this temperature.

Our ice bath chillers also offer a further upgrade to this technology, with an automated sleep mode or energy conservation mode, whereby they will reach the set temperature then the compressor will switch off but the water will continue to circulate through the filtration and sanitation. The compressor will not switch back on until the temperature variation reaches 2 degrees celsius above the set water temperature, offering a super energy efficient and quiet ice bath filtration system.

Types of Chiller Operation

Modern ice bath chillers come with various control options to enhance user convenience and functionality. Here are the primary types of chiller operation:

Manual Push Button Controls

Manual push button controls are straightforward and user-friendly. They allow users to manually adjust the chiller’s settings, such as temperature and power, by pressing physical buttons on the unit. This type of control is reliable and easy to use, making it suitable for those who prefer a more hands-on approach.
