Frequently Asked Questions

Here, we answer all of your questions about our ice bath tubs. If we don’t answer them here, simply get in touch.

 Product Use

  • All of our cold plunge tubs are extremely simple to set up.

The Roman and Stoic ice baths feature an automated chiller unit that can be WIFI controlled via the Tuya Smart App which is available to download for free on IOS and Android. Simply fill up your ice bath with water, connect the chiller to the tub, and pair your chiller to the app on your device and control your temperature remotely with your phone for cold or hot plunge on demand.

Our Stoic Portable and Easy Plunge options take minutes to inflate and can be packed down into the carry bag included. The Stoic can also be purchased with the chiller unit which plugs directly into the tub.

It is important to ensure your space has adequate drainage and air flow and are only set up in water safe spaces where condensation and water spillage to do present an issue.

  • The chillers are designed to run 24/7, with a powerful 0.8, 1 or 2HP chiller units depending on your tub of choice. For optimal running efficiency, the tub should be covered when not in use and the filter cleaned on a regular basis.

You can also set automated timing schedules via the Tuya App to have the unit power ON/OFF at times suited to your daily routine.

  • Ice bathing and cold water exposure is generally a safe practice, however we recommend consulting a medical professional if you are concerned with pre-existing medical conditions and the contraindications of cold exposure.

  • We recommend taking an ice bath at least 3-4 days per week for optimal results. The latest science indicates that the minimum effective dose to achieve the metabolic benefits of ice baths is 11-15 minutes per week.

  • Ice baths and saunas both offer benefits for exercise recovery.

In general, an ice bath is an ideal form of recovery following endurance based, cardio style exercise. Ice baths are not ideal following strength training.

Contrast therapy, using periods of cold plunge followed by sauna is also an effect form of recovery for athletes.

Read more here for ice bath vs sauna information.

  • For the optimal running of your Plunge Tub we recommend changing out water every month or sooner if you are using a chiller and once a week or sooner if you are using without a chiller.

While water quality remains the responsibility of the end user, you can extend the life of your water by practicing good pre plunge hygiene by washing the body and feet off well, and always skimming the water with a spa net post plunge.

If you are using the ice bath in a traffic space like a gym or recovery space you should empty and refill the water once per week or sooner, and regularly test water to maintain water chemistry.

  • It is recommended to change out your filter every 3-4 weeks, based on a daily use by a single person. If you are using the ice bath in a high traffic space, you may need to change the filter weekly or sooner.

To extend the life of your filter, we recommend showering before every plunge and minimising the dirt and particles that enter the ice bath by using the top cover after every use.

We provide five (5) ice bath filter replacements with each order, and more can be purchased on our website.

  • All of our plunge tubs with chiller units are freestanding and do not require any plumbing installation.

Both the Roman, Original Dual and Warrior tub feature a drain valve that allows a standard 12 or 18mm garden hose to be attached to direct the water to a floor waste, drain or garden for drainage. The Portable tub varieties feature a drainage valve to empty the water.

  • You must have a licensed electrician install a suitable weather-proof power source close to where you you will use the tub, and for maximum safety avoid using extension cords.

We recommend at least overhead protection from the elements as direct sunlight exposure will significantly affect cooling performance.

Our chillers are IPX4 rated, meaning they are able to withstand rain splash, so are suitable for indoor or outdoor use.

  • All of our tubs are suitable for users up to 6’ 9”. For tall humans, we highly recommend The Roman - which suits those up to 6’9” and have the largest tub capacity of all our tubs.

  • Although our Chiller units are automated, it is important to maintain a regular maintenance protocol to keep things running smoothly and avoid damage to mechanical components. This includes:

    • Monitoring flow rate which should remain between 17-20L/min

    • Regularly checking and cleaning (weekly or sooner) internal metal particulate filter which catches hair, floating debris and fluff.

    • Regularly checking the replaceable paper filter for soiling

    • Keeping the internal tub surfaces clean and regularly skimming the water for floating debris

    • Monitoring and testing water quality to maintain water at safe levels and changing water as required, we recommend water change every 4 weeks or sooner depending on usage.

  • While water quality and testing remains the responsibility of the end user, our chiller units are fitted with 3 layers of filtration and sanitation including the replaceable paper filter, metal particulate filter and ozone sanitation which means you can use the ice bath without adding any chemicals.

That being said, their are certain rules around the use of sanitation products for setting up your ice bath in a business which we recommend contacting your local authority for specific rules and regulations.

We do provide low chlor treatment products with our 6 Month Maintenance Pack which offers everything needed to test and maintain the water, plus 6 paper filters.

  • If your chiller makes a bubbling or whirling noise, this may simply be the normal operation of the ozone sanitation as it releases the ozone gas into the water.

You will see the Ozone button lit up green on your display screen (V2 Chiller), or the leaf symbol flashing (V1 Chiller) and also see bubbles being pumped into your tub. The ozone can operate for up to 5 minutes at a time.

This can be reduced by pressing Settings on your display, then + or - on the Ozone Time setting (V2 Chiller).

If the whirring noise is not the ozone in operation, you may need to tighten all of your hoses, valves and connections firmly and check that your filter is correctly positioned inside the canister to avoid flow issues or air intake.

For detailed troubleshooting steps refer to your Digital Manual or contact us for support on Livechat or email.

  • You can control the temperature of the ice bath remotely using the app on your device (Tuya Smart App or Smart Life App), or manually via the chiller’s touch screen display.

You can also set automated on/off schedules for each day of the week based on your routine, so the ice bath is ready when you are.

  • We do not recommend adding salts or minerals to the water as this may negatively effect the operation of the chiller and cause blockages.

  • No - the ice bath chiller is designed so that it will turn off once it has reached the desired temperature. Once the water temperature reaches a few degrees above the set temperature the chiller will turn back on to cool/heat the water again, saving precious power and reducing energy consumption.

  • When using the app controls for your chiller unit, the play/auto button will allow the chiller to automatically start functioning when the power is turned on to the chiller.

It is important to switch off the chiller to mains power when you are emptying the ice bath or conducting maintenance. This ensures the chiller won't automatically switch on when empty.

  • It is important to never use the chiller outside the operating ambient temperature range of 1C to 40C.

For extreme cold climates, draining the bath when not in use can prevent ice-related damage, which is not covered under the product Warranty.

  • Yes! If you are leaving your ice bath unattended for long periods it is essential that you empty and drain both the ice bath and chiller system. Leaving your ice bath and chiller full of water without maintenance can cause poor water chemistry that may cause components to cease and/or break. Always empty and clean your ice bath when not in use for extended periods.

 Specifications

  • The lowest temperature that the Ritual chiller units can reach is 3 degrees Celsius or 37.5 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • The maximum temperature of our chillers can reach is 42 degrees Celsius or 107 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • We have a number of different options with our chiller units in terms of power and therefore cooling speed.

We have the 0.8HP Chiller which is used with the Stoic which has a cooling capacity of 1770W and will take approximately 4-5 hours to cool down the water.

The Roman tubs can be purchased with either the 1HP or 2HP chiller.

The 1HP (standard) chiller has a cooling capacity of 2900W and will chill the water in approximately 3-4 hours.

The 2HP (pro) chiller has a cooling capacity of 5750W and will chill the water down in approximately 2-3 hours.

To take the water from its minimum to maximum temperature (or visa versa) takes approximately 12-14 hours.

Note that exposure to the elements will dramatically affect cooling/heating performance. Cooling time is also affected by ambient temperature, ventilation and air flow in the space, frequency of use, water flow rate.

  • The amount of energy or electricity that the Ritual Ice Bath Tub uses varies largely on the ambient or outside temperature that the ice bath is being used in, the ventilation quality in the space, the amount of people using the bath and how well the tub is covered between uses. If the ice bath is positioned in an area that receives a lot of direct sunlight, it would consume more energy to cool the water.

The energy consumption of the ice bath also depends on how frequently the chiller unit is changed from cooling to heating which uses more energy to change the temperature of the water.

In general, energy consumption for the unit is about $2/day based on a once daily use of the ice bath at its minimum temperature.

  • The dimensions of each of our ice baths are slightly different and can be found in detail on the individual product pages.

The Roman plunge tub is designed to fit through standard doorways and offer maximum aesthetic to suit a wide variety of spaces. The Roman dimensions are:

    • 1350mm long

  • The weight of the Roman is approximately 90kg when empty and 540kg when filled with water.

The Stoic is approximately 13kg when empty and approximately 400kg when filled with water.

Please pay careful attention when installing your plunge tub that the platform is designed and rated for the weight of the tub when full, and is only ever set up on an even, flat and stable surface.

  • The Warrior Plunge Tub is approximately 500L capacity.

The Roman ice bath is approximately 460L capacity.

The Ritual Portable Tub is approximately 370L capacity.

  • Our chillers have a 64dB rating, not much louder than a household a/c compressor. When not in cooling/heating mode and just circulating water the chiller is 40dB.

  • The ozone time indicates the amount of time in minutes set for the ozone function to operate. We recommend setting the ozone time at 2 minutes for normal residential use.

The ozone will come on for your set amount of time and will automatically switch off. During the ozone function, you will notice the ozone button illuminated on the display screen and bubbles being pumped into your ice bath water.

  • Our ice baths fit through standard household doorways, so you should have no trouble moving the ice bath through to your desired space.

Please keep in mind when needing to move the ice bath around internal spaces that you should always check that the dimensions of the ice bath will suit your space.

  • Yes, all of our ice baths include a lid to cover your ice bath in between uses and reduce power consumption and keep out unwanted dirt, dust and debris from your water.

  • Cold therapy can numb muscles and reduce circulation, so move carefully when exiting. Take slow, controlled breaths and use the buddy system when ice bathing to give you support when entering or exiting the ice bath if needed. Avoid standing up too quickly to prevent dizziness. Always place and absorbent, non-slip mat at the base of your ice bath to aid in keeping your entry and exit area as safe as possible.
