The Founder’s Cold Plunge Journey: Cold, Resilience, and Purpose
Growing up on the coast of Australia, I learned early on that the ocean demands respect. From a young age, I was drawn to surf life saving. Not just for the camaraderie and competition, but for the deep connection to the raw power of nature. Training and competing meant braving the cold, unpredictable sea. Early morning sessions in bone-chilling water taught me more than just how to swim or save a life—they instilled in me an unshakable discipline, a respect for discomfort, and a love for what happens when you embrace the elements.
As I got older, that passion evolved into a relentless drive to test my limits. I set my sights on becoming an Australian Navy Clearance Diver, one of the most demanding roles in the military. The journey was brutal. Training wasn’t just physical, it pushed me to the edge mentally and emotionally. Days and nights spent diving in extreme conditions became my new normal. Being cold, wet, hungry, and tired wasn’t just a reality, it was the standard. We called them the “four pillars of misery,” and they became both my tormentors and my teachers. In that suffering, I discovered something profound: the mind and body can endure far more than you ever believe possible, if only you can lean into the discomfort.
It was during this time that I discovered something unexpected: the same cold water I hated at times, could also be my greatest ally. Controlled cold exposure became a powerful tool for recovery, mental clarity, and resilience. At first, it was simply a way to deal with the physical strain. Soaking in ice baths eased the inflammation and soreness from endless hours of training. But over time, it became much more than that. The cold offered something deeper: a way to reset, refocus, and reconnect.
When you immerse yourself in freezing water, everything else disappears. The cold strips away the noise, the stress, and the overthinking. It demands presence. In those moments, you are fully alive, your body, mind, and breath working in unison to survive the discomfort. It’s there, in that stillness, that I found clarity. I realised the power of cold wasn’t just in physical recovery; it was in its ability to build mental resilience and fortitude. Over time, I saw firsthand how controlled cold exposure could help others, not just my teammates, but anyone looking to navigate stress, overcome challenges, or reconnect with themselves.
This experience became the seed that would grow into my ice bath business. I knew the benefits of cold water immersion weren’t just for elite athletes or special forces operators. They were for anyone seeking better recovery, greater resilience, and a deeper connection to their own potential. I wanted to take what I’d learned through years of cold exposure and make it accessible to others. I wanted to create more than a product, I wanted to create an experience that could empower people to embrace discomfort and transform their lives, just as I had.
That’s why we built Ritual Recovery around the idea of meaningful rituals. Cold exposure is more than just stepping into freezing water; it’s about creating a moment for yourself, a deliberate practice to reset, recharge, and reconnect. Rituals have power. They anchor us, provide structure, and create space for growth. At Ritual Recovery, we encourage everyone to build their own ritual around cold immersion, whether it’s starting your morning with clarity, winding down after a tough day, or simply carving out a moment to breathe and be present.
Today, that mission drives everything we do. Our ice baths aren’t just tools for recovery, they are gateways to resilience. They invite you to step into the cold, embrace the discomfort, and come out stronger on the other side. Whether you’re an athlete looking to perform at your peak, a busy professional navigating stress, or someone simply looking to reconnect with your body and mind, the cold has something to teach you.
For me, this journey started in the cold ocean as a kid and led me through extreme working environments as a Navy Clearance Diver. But the truth is, the cold’s lessons are universal. It doesn’t matter where you start, what matters is that you take the plunge. Because in the cold, you find clarity, strength, and resilience you never knew you had.
So here’s my invitation to you: Get in. Embrace the cold. Build your ritual. And see what’s on the other side.
